Assessment Reasoning
This is a new feature adding inline code block preview in Microsoft 365 Copilot. It simplifies the workflow and reduces context switching but does not change core functionality. No configuration or compliance action is required from admins, though some communication or training updates may be helpful. User impact is moderate due to UI changes in the chat experience, but behaviour remains intuitive and existing flows continue to work.

Code Blocks in M365 Copilot
Message ID: MC1472029

[What and Why:]

We’re introducing inline preview support for code blocks in Microsoft 365 Copilot. Users will be able to view and interact with supported content, such as code, charts, diagrams, and other visual outputs, directly within the conversation experience.

Previously, users previewed code content in a separate side-by-side code canvas. With this update, previews are displayed inline within the chat, reducing context switching and making it easier to review, iterate on, and share generated content.

[Rollout Schedule:]

General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out in mid-September 2026 and expect to complete rollout by late September 2026.

[Impact on Your Organization:]

Who is affected

  • Users with access to Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Platforms

  • Microsoft 365 Copilot

What will happen

  • Supported code blocks will render directly within Copilot conversations.
  • Users can preview supported content types, including code, charts, diagrams, and similar visual outputs, without opening a separate code canvas.
  • The update streamlines the Copilot experience by keeping generated content and previews within the conversation flow.
  • Existing Copilot workflows and prompts continue to work as expected.

[Action Required / Recommendations:]

No action is required.

You may want to notify your users about this experience update and update any internal training or adoption materials that reference the side-by-side code canvas experience.
