📢 Official Microsoft Message Center Announcement

Changes to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint agents in Microsoft Copilot
Message ID: MC1536062

What and why

We are replacing the standalone Word, Excel, and PowerPoint agents with document-creation and editing capabilities built into the Copilot app for users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot user subscription license (USL). In Copilot Chat, users can ask Copilot to create or refine a document, workbook, or presentation directly. Copilot will use its integrated capabilities rather than invoke the standalone agents.

Rollout schedule

Worldwide General Availability rollout will begin in mid-November 2026 and is expected to complete by late December 2026.

Impact on your organization

This update affects all users with a USL who currently have access to the standalone Word, Excel, and PowerPoint agents.

In Chat, users can ask Copilot directly to create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, without selecting a standalone agent.

  • As the change reaches users, the standalone agents will be removed from the left rail and agent discovery. Users will no longer be able to find, pin, @mention, or invoke them as separate agents.
  • Previously generated files will remain in their existing OneDrive or SharePoint locations, subject to existing permissions and retention settings.
  • Previous conversation history will remain available to view. Users will not be able to continue working with the standalone agents in those conversations. To create documents or make edits, users should start a new conversation in Chat.

Action required / recommendations

No admin configuration or user setup is required. Inform affected users and helpdesk staff to start new document-creation and editing tasks directly in Chat, and update guidance that points users to the standalone agents.

Compliance considerations

This update introduces no changes to data processing. Existing file permissions and retention settings continue to apply. Changes to standalone-agent availability and conversation continuation are described above.
