Copilot for Microsoft 365 available for self-service purchase [MC886385]

Message ID: MC886385

Self Service purchases are a great way for IT to accelerate and streamline productivity tools for their organization by providing a way for end users to purchase products with their own payment instrument, allowing end users to bring their own products to their company to help enhance their productivity with AI. With notifications in Microsoft 365 admin center for self-service purchases, this provides admins signals on user demand and usage.

Beginning October 2024, Microsoft will be rolling out Copilot for Microsoft 365 to the eligible list of products enabled for self-service purchases for users who have an eligible Microsoft 365 Business suite license: Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Business Standard, or Business Premium.

[When this will happen:]

We will begin rolling in early October 2024 and will complete by mid-November 2024.

[How this will affect your organization:]

End users will be able to complete purchase of Copilot for Microsoft 365 licenses if they click on the “Add Copilot to your Microsoft plan” link. This button will surface on the Copilot for Microsoft 365 product page, as well as the Copilot for Microsoft 365 Billing page.

As an admin, you ultimately still maintain control over licenses in your tenant. You can view licenses purchased by users in the Microsoft 365 admin center, by going to Billing > Your Products page. You can also view by going to the Licensing page and viewing or filtering to Self-Service licenses. On the Products tab, select the Self-service filter. As with any new product, you will be able to view product usage in your tenant in the Usage page in MAC.

You are able to take over control of licenses purchased by the user at any time and manage them as you would any other license within your tenant.

Please note the cancellation policy for Copilot for Microsoft 365 – the user has a seven-day window to receive a full refund.

If you have disabled purchases, the end user will instead be able to submit a license request to you, either through the license request flow or your own custom license request process. These grouped notifications will appear in the Microsoft 365 admin center and you can manage these requests by going to the Requests tab on the Licensing page. To learn more about license requests, see this article.

[What you need to do to prepare:]

No action is required. This feature is enable on by default, To learn more about managing or disabling self-service purchases, see this article or this FAQ.

Please note that Copilot for Microsoft 365 requires the users’ managed devices to be on Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel to enable experiences on desktop apps. If a user is not on the correct channel, they will not be able to use their license in their desktop applications and you will receive a notification.

Action notifications will surface in the Microsoft 365 admin center, when a self-service purchase happens, allowing you to see the new license on the licensing page.
