Microsoft Edge Mobile: Updated Weather and Wallpaper on the New tab page (Microsoft Entra ID users) [MC907533]

Message ID: MC907533

Two new features are coming soon for Microsoft Entra ID users on the New tab page in Microsoft Edge for Android and iOS devices:

  • Wallpaper. For organizations that do not have customized branding information, the default value of the com.microsoft.intune.mam.managedbrowser.NewTabPageLayout.Custom key will change from topsites|newsfeed to topsites|wallpaper|newsfeed. When users open Edge mobile, the Wallpaper will be turned on by default on the New tab page.
  • Weather. This rollout will add the new value weather into the com.microsoft.intune.mam.managedbrowser.disabledFeatures key and keep the default value for weather as enabled. When users open Edge mobile, they will see the weather icon on top left of the New tab page and can select the weather details page.

[When this will happen:]

General Availability (Worldwide, GCC, GCC High, DoD): We will begin rolling out the Wallpaper updates in Microsoft Edge Stable version 129, expected in early October 2024.

General Availability (Worldwide, GCC, GCC High): We will begin rolling out the Weather updates in Microsoft Edge Stable version 130, expected in late October 2024.

[How this will affect your organization:]

Before this rollout, Edge mobile devices in organizations that do not have customized branding information do not display Wallpaper. All Edge mobile users do not have access to Weather on the New tab page.

After this rollout, when branding information is not customized by the admin, users will have the New tab page wallpaper turned on by default. Also, users will see the weather icon in the top left of the New tab page and can select the weather details page.

This change is on by default.

[What you need to do to prepare:]

This rollout will happen automatically by the specified date with no admin action required before the rollout. Review your current configuration to determine the impact for your organization. You may want to notify your users about this change and update any relevant documentation.

Microsoft Edge Mobile: Updated Weather and Wallpaper on the New tab page (Microsoft Entra ID users)

Hold onto your hats, folks! Microsoft Edge Mobile is rolling out two shiny new features for Entra ID users, and it’s bound to make your New tab page a whole lot more interesting. Let’s dive into what this means for admins and users alike.

First up, Wallpaper! If your organization hasn’t customized its branding information, the default setting for the New tab page layout will now include a wallpaper. That’s right, instead of just seeing your top sites and newsfeed, you’ll be greeted with a lovely wallpaper every time you open Edge mobile. It’s like a mini-vacation for your eyes! Admins, you don’t need to lift a finger for this change—it’s all happening automatically. But you might want to give your users a heads-up so they don’t think they’ve accidentally downloaded a wallpaper app.

Next on the list is Weather. This feature will add a weather icon to the top left of the New tab page, and users can click on it to see detailed weather information. No more guessing if you need an umbrella or sunscreen—Edge has got you covered! Again, this will be enabled by default, so admins can sit back and relax. Just make sure to update any relevant documentation and let your users know about this handy new feature.

Now, let’s talk timelines. The Wallpaper update will start rolling out in early October 2024 with Microsoft Edge Stable version 129. The Weather update will follow in late October 2024 with version 130. So, mark your calendars and get ready for a more visually appealing and informative browsing experience.

In summary, these updates are designed to enhance the user experience without requiring any extra effort from admins. It’s a win-win! Users get a more engaging New tab page, and admins can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with a seamless rollout.
