Assessment Reasoning
The onboarding wizard retirement requires admins to review and update internal documentation, training, and support materials, and to communicate changes to frontline teams before mid-August 2026. The impact on users is low because core Teams onboarding remains, but admins need to ensure BYOD scripts and processes are adjusted. Urgency is moderate as the deadline is about a month away, and implementation involves coordinated updates across helpdesk and training resources.

[What and Why:]

Microsoft is retiring the Frontline Teams Personal Device Onboarding Wizard, a web-based experience that helped frontline workers configure Microsoft Teams on their personal Android and iOS devices. Users will continue to onboard through existing Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft Intune, and Microsoft Authenticator experiences. Existing security controls such as MFA, app protection policies, and Conditional Access remain unchanged.

[Rollout Schedule:]

  • Retirement begins in mid-August 2026 and completes by late August 2026.

[Impact on Your Organization:]

Who is affected:

  • Organizations using the Frontline Teams Personal Device Onboarding Wizard.
  • Administrators managing frontline worker onboarding and BYOD deployments.
  • Helpdesk teams and frontline managers.

What will happen:

  • The Frontline Teams Personal Device Onboarding Wizard will be retired and will no longer be available to frontline workers on personal Android and iOS devices.
  • Frontline workers will continue to be able to install and sign in to Microsoft Teams using existing Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Entra ID, Intune, and Microsoft Authenticator onboarding experiences, as applicable to your organization’s requirements.
  • No new admin controls or configuration changes are required as part of this retirement.

This change does not affect:

  • Microsoft Teams access on personal devices.
  • Existing Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) deployments.
  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA).
  • App protection policies.
  • Conditional Access policies.

Only the dedicated onboarding wizard experience is being retired.

[Action Required/Recommendations:]

Action is recommended if your organization currently references this onboarding wizard.

Recommended administrator checklist:

  • Review onboarding documentation for references to the Frontline Teams Personal Device Onboarding Wizard.
  • Update BYOD deployment guides and frontline worker training materials.
  • Create or update alternative instructions for:
    • Installing Microsoft Teams on Android and iOS devices.
    • Signing in to Microsoft Teams.
    • Completing MFA registration requirements.
    • Completing Intune enrollment or app protection requirements where applicable.
  • Communicate the retirement to helpdesk personnel and frontline managers before mid-August 2026.
  • Validate that existing onboarding documentation points users to Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft Intune, and Microsoft Authenticator experiences rather than the retired wizard.
  • Review support scripts and knowledge articles to ensure they do not reference the retired experience.

[Compliance Considerations:]

No compliance considerations identified, review as appropriate for your organization.
