Assessment Reasoning
This is a new feature expansion for Planner Agent within Microsoft Copilot Chat, introducing task assignment, catch-up automation, and memory integration. Rollout begins in early December 2026, and while no mandatory admin action is required, organisations should review licensing, manage access, and inform users. Admin impact is moderate due to configuration and awareness needs, and user impact is noticeable because of new task management and AI-assisted workflows. Urgency is moderate as rollout is imminent but does not require immediate technical changes.

Microsoft Copilot Chat: Planner Agent task assignment, catch-up, and Copilot memory integration
Message ID: MC1539002

[What and why]

We are expanding Planner Agent in Microsoft Copilot Chat with task assignment, scheduled task catch-up, and Copilot memory integration. These improvements help users manage tasks and shared plans, identify outstanding work, and receive personalized responses. We are also improving support for larger plans, response quality, speed, and reliability.

[Rollout schedule]

  • General Availability (Worldwide): Rollout will begin in early December 2026 and is expected to complete by early December 2026.

[Impact on your organization]

Who is affected

  • Users with an active Microsoft Copilot license who have access to Planner Agent. Administrators can manage Planner Agent availability through the Microsoft 365 admin center.

Platforms and services

  • Microsoft Copilot on the web
  • Microsoft Copilot in Microsoft Teams
  • Microsoft Planner

What will happen

Task assignment

  • Users can assign tasks to one or more people in shared basic plans, including assigning multiple tasks at once.
  • Users can reassign or remove assignees, view tasks grouped by person, and review proposed changes before saving them.

Scheduled task catch-up

  • Users can identify outstanding work, commitments, and items awaiting their input based on recent emails, chats, and meetings.
  • Users can generate suggestions on demand or configure recurring schedules with optional email notifications when suggestions are ready for review.
  • Suggested tasks include their sources and remain editable drafts until users save them to Planner. Users can modify, pause, or delete their schedules.

Copilot memory

  • Planner Agent can personalize responses using saved memories and preferences inferred from previous Copilot chats.
  • Users can save, update, or delete memories through Planner Agent and review, delete, or turn off memories in Copilot personalization settings.

Additional improvements

  • Users can create plans without the previous 30-task limit and receive more complete responses for complex plans.
  • Model selection, improved grounding in Microsoft 365 content, and performance enhancements provide more flexible, reliable responses.
  • Users can find Planner Agent under Agents & Skills, pin it, or invoke it using @Planner Agent in Copilot chats.

Limitations and default behavior

  • Planner Agent supports personal tasks and shared basic plans, but not premium plans. It cannot delete tasks or undo changes.
  • These improvements are enabled by default for users with access to Planner Agent. Users can run task catch-up on demand or configure recurring schedules. No recurring schedule is created automatically.
  • AI-generated tasks, plans, and updates, including task assignments, remain drafts until users review and confirm them.
  • Planner Agent uses only content that the signed-in user already has permission to access in Microsoft 365.

[Action required and recommendations]

No admin action is required. We recommend that you:

  • Confirm that users have an active Microsoft Copilot license.
  • Review Planner Agent access settings in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
  • Inform users about the new capabilities, including optional scheduled task catch-up.
  • Update internal documentation and training materials.
  • Pin Planner Agent for easier access through Agents > All agents > Manage pinned agents in the Microsoft 365 admin center. Pinning requires the AI Administrator role and can take up to six hours to appear.
