Microsoft Edge: New location for Edge profile in the toolbar [MC1070845]

Message ID: MC1070845

Coming soon to Microsoft Edge: With multiple tabs open, the tab strip is valuable space for you to quickly find the right tabs. To increase visibility of tab titles, we will move the user Profile label to the toolbar.

[When this will happen:]

General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out early May 2025 and expect to complete by mid-May 2025.

The changes are included in Microsoft Edge version 136.

[How this will affect your organization:]

Before this rollout, the Profile label was located in the title bar on the left side of the screen:

After this rollout, the Profile label will change to a minimized icon without a text label that appears in the toolbar on the right side of the screen. These changes will be on by default.

[What you need to do to prepare:]

This rollout will happen automatically by the specified date with no admin action required before the rollout. You may want to notify your users about this change and update any relevant documentation.

Admins can use the ProfileTypeInProfileButtonEnabled policy to control whether the label for the work or school profile type is shown in the profile button. As of Microsoft Edge version 136.0.3240.45, companies with organization branding changes configured through the Edge management service will experience these Profile changes.

The upcoming change in Microsoft Edge regarding the relocation of the user profile label from the title bar to the toolbar is sure to have interesting implications for both admins and users alike.

For users, this update promises to enhance the browsing experience by freeing up valuable tab space, allowing for clearer visibility of tab titles. As someone who often juggles multiple tabs like a circus performer, this change could be a game-changer. Yes, we all know that feeling of searching for the right tab while a dozen others seem to mock us from the background! With the profile label minimized to an icon on the right side, it’s a little less clutter and a little more focus on what really matters—those all-important tabs.

Admins, on the other hand, will find that this shift requires minimal effort on their part. The rollout will occur automatically, meaning no extra work is needed to implement it. However, a heads-up to users about the change could be beneficial, ensuring everyone is on the same page and ready to embrace the new layout. Plus, for those organizations that have specific branding configurations, using the ProfileTypeInProfileButtonEnabled policy will allow for some control over how profiles are displayed.

In terms of impact, this change is likely to enhance user satisfaction by streamlining their browsing experience while also simplifying the admin’s workload. It’s a win-win! That said, humor aside, let’s not forget that change can sometimes be met with resistance. It’s essential to prepare users for this update to avoid any confusion.

What do you think about this change? Will it improve your browsing experience, or do you see potential hiccups? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences! Feel free to drop a comment below. And for more insights on similar topics, check out other posts at mwpro.co.uk.
