Microsoft Outlook for Mac: New reporting buttons integrated with Microsoft Defender for Office 365 [MC909163]

Microsoft Outlook for Mac: New reporting buttons integrated with Microsoft Defender for Office 365 [MC909163]

Message ID: MC909163

In September 2024, we added new built-in reporting buttons in new Microsoft Outlook for Mac desktops that allow users to report emails as phishing / junk / not junk. Admins can control the appearance and behavior of these buttons from the User reported settings page in the Microsoft 365 Defender portal (security.microsoft.com). Admins can also customize where messages get reported to (reporting mailbox, Microsoft, or both) and what the user sees both before and after reporting messages from these buttons. Your current User reported settings page has not been changed by this rollout. This message applies to new Outlook for the Mac using version 16.89.24090815(16.89.908.0).

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 371393.

[When this will happen:]

General Availability (Worldwide, GCC, GCC High, DoD): Available now.

[How this will affect your organization:]

Before this rollout: Outlook for Mac users did not see reporting buttons.

After the rollout

  • OWA (Outlook on the web), new Outlook for Windows, and classic Outlook for Windows have had this functionality since August 2024 and there is no change to it
  • Other versions of Outlook such as Mobile (iPhone and android) will remain unaffected by this change. We are working on the adding the reporting buttons to other versions of Outlook.
  • If you have the reporting feature turned off in the Microsoft 365 Defender User reported settings page or are using a third-party add-in, the reporting buttons in Outlook for Mac will not be visible to users.
  • The Microsoft reporting add-in (the Microsoft report message add-in and the Microsoft phishing add-in) will be supported until further notice. Customers who currently use the add-in and the new reporting buttons will see two sets of reporting buttons in the ribbon. However, when we add the new reporting buttons to Outlook Mobile clients in the near future, the reporting add-in will no longer be needed and can be removed.
  • The selections you make on the User reported settings page will determine whether your users choose the add-in or built-in reporting option in Outlook. Either option will report to the same place (Microsoft, custom mailbox, or both) based on the User reported settings selected.
  • Unlike OWA and new Outlook for windows, the built-in reporting buttons in Outlook for Mac do not support reporting from shared and delegate mailboxes.

    Hey everyone!

Big news for all you Mac users out there! Microsoft Outlook for Mac has just rolled out some shiny new reporting buttons integrated with Microsoft Defender for Office 365. Now, before you start wondering if this is just another update that’ll make you scratch your head, let me assure you – it’s actually pretty cool and super useful!

So, what’s the scoop? Well, starting from September 2024, if you’re using the new Microsoft Outlook for Mac (version 16.89.24090815(16.89.908.0) to be precise), you’ll notice some nifty new buttons that let you report emails as phishing, junk, or not junk. It’s like having a little superhero squad right in your inbox, ready to tackle those pesky spam emails!

For the admins out there, you’re probably thinking, “Great, another thing I need to manage.” But fear not! You can control the appearance and behavior of these buttons from the User reported settings page in the Microsoft 365 Defender portal. You can decide where the reported messages go (to a reporting mailbox, Microsoft, or both) and customize what users see before and after they report a message. So, you’re still the boss of the buttons!

Now, let’s talk about the impact. Before this update, Outlook for Mac users didn’t have these handy reporting buttons. But now, they’re joining the club with OWA (Outlook on the web), new Outlook for Windows, and classic Outlook for Windows, which have had this functionality since August 2024. Mobile users, don’t feel left out – your turn is coming soon!

If you’re using a third-party add-in or have the reporting feature turned off in the Microsoft 365 Defender settings, you won’t see these new buttons. And for those of you who are already using the Microsoft reporting add-in, you might see two sets of reporting buttons for now. But don’t worry, once the new buttons are added to Outlook Mobile clients, the add-in will no longer be needed.

One little caveat – unlike OWA and new Outlook for Windows, the built-in reporting buttons in Outlook for Mac don’t support reporting from shared and delegate mailboxes. But hey, nobody’s perfect, right?

So, what do you need to do to prepare? Just review your current configuration to see how this update will impact your organization. You might want to give your users a heads-up about the change and update any relevant documentation.

We’d love to hear what you think about this update! Do you think it’ll make your life easier? Or do you have any concerns? Drop your thoughts in the comments below and let’s get the conversation started!

    Happy emailing!
