In Microsoft Teams, users will soon be able to customize their digital avatar by uploading a photo. After the photo avatar is set up, this avatar can be used in Teams meetings and Mesh immersive spaces.
[When this will happen:]
General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out mid-November 2024 and expect to complete by late November 2024.
[How this will affect your organization:]
Requirements and limitations
- You need to use Teams 2.1 to access the Create from photo feature. We do not support classic Teams (Teams 1.0).
- The Create from photo feature is available in Teams for Windows desktops and Mac desktops. Creating an avatar from a photo feature is not currently supported in immersive spaces or the Mesh standalone app, but after an avatar is created, it will be available across all Mesh experiences.
- To use this feature, tenants must have a license for Teams Enterprise, Teams Essentials, or one of these:
- Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Microsoft 365 Business Standard, Microsoft 365 Business Premium, Microsoft 365 E3/E5, or Microsoft Office 365 E1/E3/E5
- To use avatars in Teams meetings, the minimum hardware spec requires a dual-core processor with 6GB of RAM. For the best experience, we recommend a quad-core processor and 8GB of RAM.
Setup
After the rollout, when users select the + icon to create a new avatar, they will see a new option to Create from photo in addition to the other options available before the rollout.
Watch the video for the Create from photo process (no sound, 21 seconds)
The limit of three avatars per user remains unchanged. If all three avatar slots are filled, one must be deleted to create a new avatar from a photo.
This feature will be available by default for admins to enable.
[What you need to do to prepare:]
This rollout will happen automatically by the specified date with no admin action required before the rollout. Review your current configuration to determine the impact for your organization. You may want to notify your users about this change and update any relevant documentation.
To enable this feature in Teams, you need to enable the Avatars for Microsoft Teams app in Teams through the Teams admin center. Learn more: Manage the Avatars app for Microsoft Teams – Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn.

The upcoming feature in Microsoft Teams that allows users to create avatars from photos is set to be a game-changer for both admins and users alike! With the rollout expected in mid-November 2024, this innovative addition is likely to enhance virtual interactions while adding a sprinkle of personalization to meetings.
For users, the ability to upload a photo and transform it into a digital avatar means they can express themselves in a fun and engaging way during meetings. Imagine showing up to a serious business meeting as a cartoon version of yourself—what a great icebreaker! Plus, this feature can help bridge the gap for those who may feel camera-shy or prefer a bit of anonymity while still being present in the conversation.
Admins, on the other hand, will appreciate the straightforward implementation of this feature. With no significant action required before the rollout, they can rest easy knowing that users will have access to this new capability by default. However, it’s essential for admins to review current configurations and prepare users for this change, which could bring a fresh wave of enthusiasm to team interactions.
The impact of these changes could be substantial. By fostering a more relaxed and enjoyable virtual environment, teams may find improved collaboration and communication, which ultimately boosts productivity. Just think of all the potential for creative team-building exercises using these avatars!
