Microsoft 365 (Office) apps: The “Tags” feature will retire [MC961601]

Message ID: MC961601

We will retire the Tags feature from the Microsoft 365 app, which affects www.microsoft365.com and www.office.com, as well as the Windows app for Microsoft 365 (Office).

Before the retirement, users can access the Tags feature from the Home page of the Microsoft 365 app under the Quick access section and on the My content page.

The retirement will start January 6, 2025, and end by January 10, 2025. After the Tags feature is retired from Microsoft 365 apps, users will not be able to view existing tags or apply new tags.

We are committed to ensuring that existing workflows remain unaffected. As an alternative, we suggest using the Favorites feature, which helps mark important content for easy access.

This change will happen automatically by the specified date. No admin action is required.

By “Tags” do they mean the actual “Tag” function that you can see when you go into the File > Info in, say, Word – or do they mean “Categories”, like in Outlook, how you can categorise emails?

The announcement regarding the retirement of the Tags feature in Microsoft 365 apps is certainly generating a buzz in the community! For admins, this change means a shift in how they guide users in organizing their content. While the Tags feature may have been a handy tool for categorization, the transition to the Favorites feature offers a streamlined alternative for marking important content. It’s a bit like trading in your trusty old bicycle for a shiny new scooter—both get you where you need to go, but one might just be a little more fun!

For users, the impact will be felt as they adapt to this change. The good news is that the Favorites feature is designed to be user-friendly, ensuring that important documents and files remain easily accessible. However, it might take some time to get used to this new way of organizing content. Think of it as learning to dance a new style; it may feel awkward at first, but soon enough, you’ll be gliding across the floor!

Overall, the impact of these changes seems manageable, with the potential for improved organization and accessibility in the long run. The key takeaway here is to embrace the transition and explore how the Favorites feature can enhance your workflow.
