Transitioning from user’s OneDrive to SharePoint for Whiteboards created in Teams Channels [MC1024395]

Message ID: MC1024395

We are updating the storage location for Whiteboards created from the Teams Channel Tab App. Previously, these whiteboards were saved on the initiator’s OneDrive, which caused access issues due to sharing settings, information barriers, or conditional access policies. To resolve these issues and align with the behavior of other M365 apps, whiteboards initiated from the Teams Channel Tab App will now be stored in the corresponding SharePoint site of the Teams Channel (also known as the channel site). This change ensures seamless access for all channel members while adhering to set policies.

[When this will happen:]

We will begin rolling out in early April 2025 and expect to complete by late April 2025.

[How this affects your organization:]

This update will allow whiteboard files to work seamlessly for all channel members, ensuring they continue to adhere to the set policies. All channel members who have access to these whiteboards will be able to discover them from their board picker. No action is required from tenant admins as this change is managed by the Microsoft Whiteboard product team.

[What you can do to prepare:]

No action is required from tenant admins.

This upcoming transition from OneDrive to SharePoint for Whiteboards created in Teams Channels is poised to be a game-changer for both admins and users alike. For admins, the relief is palpable—no more headaches over sharing settings or conditional access policies that often left team members in a lurch. With this update, whiteboards will be stored in the respective SharePoint site of the Teams Channel, ensuring that all channel members can access these collaborative spaces without any hiccups. It’s as if Microsoft decided to throw a party and finally sent out the invites to everyone!

For users, this change means a much smoother experience when collaborating on whiteboards. Gone are the days of wondering if your colleague can see your brilliant ideas or if they are stuck in the purgatory of OneDrive permissions. Now, everyone can dive into the creative process together, assured that access is seamless and straightforward. It’s like finally having a seat at the table without worrying about the RSVP!

The impact of these changes is bound to be significant. By aligning with the behavior of other M365 apps, Microsoft is enhancing the overall user experience and fostering a more collaborative environment. This is particularly important as remote work continues to be a staple for many organizations.
