Microsoft SharePoint Online: Changes to the API access page in the SharePoint admin center [MC1034585]

Message ID: MC1034585

The API access page in the Microsoft SharePoint admin center will soon display a set of additional permissions that have been automatically pre-authorized by Microsoft. These permissions are required for SharePoint Online to function properly.

Tenant admins can remove the permissions (and add them back to the API access page), but these actions could compromise some out-of-the-box functionalities provided by SharePoint.

[When this will happen:]

Targeted Release: We will begin rolling out mid-March 2025 and expect to complete by mid-March 2025.

General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out late March 2025 and expect to complete by late March 2025.

[How this will affect your organization:]

This change will be on by default and will have no impact on customers.

The API access page is only available if you have provisioned the application catalog for your tenant.

[What you need to do to prepare:]

This rollout will happen automatically by the specified dates with no admin action required before the rollout. You may want to update any relevant documentation.

The upcoming changes to the API access page in the SharePoint admin center are set to make quite an impact, both for admins and users alike. With Microsoft automatically pre-authorizing a new set of permissions necessary for SharePoint Online’s smooth operation, we’re looking at a shift that could enhance functionality while keeping things user-friendly.

For tenant admins, the ability to remove or restore these permissions adds a layer of control, but it’s a double-edged sword. While it’s great to have the option, tinkering with these permissions could risk some of the out-of-the-box features that make SharePoint a go-to platform for many organizations. So, admins will need to tread carefully—think of it as a game of Jenga where one wrong move could send everything tumbling down!

As for users, the good news is that this change is designed to have minimal impact. With the API access page only available for those who have provisioned the application catalog for their tenant, it seems that most users can carry on with their day-to-day tasks without a hitch. Plus, the automatic rollout means less hassle and more time to focus on what really matters—like finally figuring out how to use that one feature no one talks about!

In summary, while the changes may seem subtle, they hold the potential for significant benefits if managed correctly. It’s all about striking the right balance between control and functionality.
