With the update to the latest version of Power Automate (2.55), which will become available in April 2025, the .NET 8 runtime will be required to be installed in your environment.
How does this affect me?
The Power Automate MSI installer downloads and installs the .NET 8 runtime if it isn’t already on your machine. Without .NET 8, computers need internet access to these URLs:
- https://aka.ms/dotnet/8.0/windowsdesktop-runtime-win-x86.exe
What action do I need to take?
No action is needed if your machine already has .NET 8 x86 and x64 installed. If you do not have these installed, the installer will automatically download and install them from the URLs listed above. However, if your machine does not have .NET 8 installed and does not have access to those URLs, you will need to manually install the runtimes prior to installing Power Automate Desktop.

The upcoming update to Power Automate (version 2.55) is set to bring some significant changes, particularly with the requirement of .NET 8 being installed in your environment. So, how will this affect both admins and users? Let’s break it down!
For admins, the transition to .NET 8 means a bit of preparation. If your systems are already equipped with the latest .NET runtimes, you can breathe a sigh of relief. However, for those who haven’t updated yet, it’s essential to ensure that your machines are ready to avoid any hiccups during installation. Think of it as giving your systems a little tune-up before the big race!
Users, on the other hand, may find this update a bit more seamless. The Power Automate MSI installer is designed to take care of the .NET 8 runtime installation for you, provided that you have internet access. So, unless you’re in a remote location without connectivity (or perhaps in a digital Bermuda Triangle), you should be good to go. Just remember, if you’re in a situation where your machine lacks access to the necessary URLs, a little manual installation will be in order.
Overall, the impact of these changes is likely to be positive. For admins, it’s a chance to ensure systems are up-to-date, which fosters a smoother experience for everyone. And for users, the automatic installation means less hassle and more time to focus on what really matters—getting things done efficiently!
