Changes to how users install Microsoft 365 apps from the Microsoft 365 Copilot app [MC1062453]

Message ID: MC1062453

The My account portal will be replaced by a new modal dialog within the Microsoft 365 Copilot app (formerly Office.com) on web and desktop. The new modal will support end user self-installs that are currently available on the My account portal (Office, Project, Visio, and Skype for Business).

[When this will happen:]

Targeted Release: We will begin rolling out mid-May 2025 and expect to complete by late May 2025.

General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out late May 2025 and expect to complete by late June 2025.

[How this will affect your organization:]

End users will be able to download their apps by accessing the modal dialog in Apps > Install apps > Install Microsoft 365 apps in the Microsoft 365 Copilot web and desktop app.

[What you need to do to prepare:]

If you allow users to self-install apps:

  • Please remove direct links to the My account portal (https://portal.office.com/account) in your self-install communications. Instead, please refer your users to the official Microsoft documentation for installing Office (Download, install or reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office 2024 on PC or Mac). This article will be updated to describe the new self-installs experience when it is released.

If you do not allow users to install apps:

Blocking Microsoft Admin Portals using Conditional Access Policies will no longer block self-installs. If you have used this setting to block self-installations, you will need to use one of the settings listed above instead.

The recent updates to how users install Microsoft 365 apps through the Microsoft 365 Copilot app are set to bring about some significant changes for both admins and users. On one hand, this shift simplifies the installation process for end users, while also presenting a few challenges for administrators.

For users, the introduction of a new modal dialog within the Copilot app means that installing essential applications like Office, Project, Visio, and Skype for Business will be more straightforward. This change is particularly beneficial for those who prefer autonomy in managing their software. No longer will they need to navigate through the My account portal; instead, they can simply access the new dialog under “Apps > Install apps > Install Microsoft 365 apps.” This user-friendly approach is sure to enhance the overall experience, making it easier for everyone to get the tools they need without unnecessary delays.

However, admins will need to adapt to these changes. If your organization permits self-installation, it’s crucial to update your communications and remove direct links to the old My account portal. Instead, directing users to the official Microsoft documentation will ensure they have the most accurate and up-to-date resources at their fingertips. On the flip side, for those who prefer to maintain tighter control over app installations, the existing settings in the Microsoft 365 admin center remain effective. Just be mindful that blocking access to admin portals won’t prevent self-installs under the new system, so adjustments may be necessary.

In terms of the overall impact, these changes represent a significant step towards a more integrated and user-centric approach to software management within the Microsoft ecosystem. While it may take some time for everyone to adjust, the long-term benefits of improved efficiency and user satisfaction are well worth the transition.

I encourage all readers to share their thoughts on this update! How do you think these changes will affect your workflow or your team’s dynamics?
