Microsoft Defender: Updates to Export Quarantine Message cmdlet [MC1069558]

Message ID: MC1069558

Coming soon to Microsoft Defender: Updated password functionality for downloading Quarantine items through the Export-QuarantineMessage cmdlet in Microsoft PowerShell.

[When this will happen:]

General Availability (Worldwide, GCC, GCC High): We began rolling out late April 2025 and expect to complete by late May 2025.

[How this will affect your organization:]

With this rollout, we will offer the -PasswordV2 parameter as a new experience that allows admins and users to pass plain text for their passwords when exporting Quarantine items in PowerShell cmdlet. Admins and users should use the -PasswordV2 parameter, because using the previous -Password parameter may cause errors and –Password won’t be available in the longer term.

This change will be available by default.

[What you need to do to prepare:]

The purpose of this message is for awareness. This rollout will happen automatically by the specified dates with no admin action required before the rollout. Review your current configuration to assess the impact on your organization. You may want to notify your users about this change and update any relevant documentation.

The recent update to Microsoft Defender’s Export-QuarantineMessage cmdlet is set to bring some noteworthy changes that will impact both admins and users alike. With the introduction of the new -PasswordV2 parameter, the process of exporting Quarantine items is about to get a whole lot easier and more efficient.

For admins, this update means less headache and fewer errors when handling exports. Switching to the -PasswordV2 parameter will streamline operations, as the old -Password parameter will eventually be phased out. So, it’s time to bid adieu to any confusion that could arise from using outdated commands. It’s like cleaning out your closet—once it’s done, you’ll wonder how you ever lived with the clutter!

Users will also benefit from this update. With the new functionality, they can now enter passwords in plain text, simplifying the process of retrieving their Quarantine items. This should lead to a smoother user experience, reducing frustration and potentially saving time. After all, who doesn’t appreciate a bit of simplicity in their work life?

As for the overall impact of these changes, it’s likely to be quite significant. The automatic rollout means that organizations won’t have to take any extra steps to implement the update, but it’s still wise to review current configurations and notify users about the upcoming changes. Just think of it as giving everyone a friendly heads-up before a surprise party—everyone loves a good surprise, but a little preparation never hurts!

I encourage everyone to share their thoughts and experiences regarding this update. Have you faced any challenges with the previous cmdlet? Do you think this update will make your life easier? Let’s hear your comments below!
