On May 30, 2025, Microsoft Copilot Studio is introducing a new feature called custom search topics. This will allow creators to explore a knowledge base and keep the raw data they find as a variable.
How does this affect me?
Makers will be able to use a custom search node, available as a topic action, to run a search on a knowledge source and save the raw data output as a variable using the following steps:
- Open Microsoft Copilot Studio.
- Navigate to the topic you want to perform the call to the model. If you want to include the model call grounding data, use the new custom search action. Please note that this new node will allow you to use RAG to extract raw data as opposed to the Gen Answer node.
- To include the user message context, set the system variable ‘Activity.Text’ as the input. The search flow will gather all required context and create a search query. Select either the relevant or all knowledge sources in the Data sources, located under action properties, Knowledge sources. You can also set moderation level and latency message.
- Save the search output in a new variable. This node will then be available for all Microsoft Copilot Studio users in your organization.
What do I need to do to prepare?
This message is for awareness and no action is required.
