Power Platform – Use Azure Key Vault secrets with environment variables [MC1069521]

Message ID: MC1069521

We are announcing the ability to use Azure Key Vault secrets with environment variables in Power Platform. This feature will reach general availability on May 15, 2025.

How does this affect me?
Environment variables in Power Platform will support referencing secrets stored in Azure Key Vault. This functionality allows secrets to be used within Power Automate flows and custom connectors.

Secrets referenced through environment variables are not accessible in other types of customizations and are not available through the API. The environment variable does not store the secret itself. Instead, it stores a reference to the location of the secret in Azure Key Vault. The actual secret remains securely stored in Azure Key Vault.

What action do I need to take?
To enable this functionality, Azure Key Vault must be configured to grant Power Platform access to the specific secrets being referenced. This is done using a private link connection to enhance security.

For more information about this feature and instructions on how to configure Azure Key Vault, see the documentation here.

This recent update to the Power Platform, allowing the use of Azure Key Vault secrets with environment variables, is a game changer for both admins and users. It not only enhances the security of sensitive information but also streamlines processes within Power Automate flows and custom connectors.

For admins, this means an added layer of security without the headache of managing secrets directly within the platform. Instead of juggling multiple storage solutions, admins can now reference secrets stored securely in Azure Key Vault, ensuring that the actual secrets remain safe and sound. Think of it as having a super secure vault for your prized possessions—only the key holders (a.k.a. the admins) can access it!

Users, on the other hand, will benefit from smoother workflows. With the ability to pull in secrets dynamically without exposing them, users can create more robust and secure automations without compromising on functionality. It’s like being able to whip up a gourmet meal without revealing your secret ingredient!

As for the impact of these changes, it’s significant. The integration of Azure Key Vault with environment variables enhances security protocols and fosters a culture of trust and efficiency within teams. However, it does require some initial setup, particularly in configuring Azure Key Vault to grant access. But once that’s done, the benefits will far outweigh the initial investment of time and effort.

So, what do you think? Are you excited about this new feature? Or do you have any questions about how to get started with Azure Key Vault?
